Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI)
It’s that time of year again and cases of harvest mite and SCI are here again. Harvest mite are the pinhead orange mites which find dark, sheltered areas on pets, such as between their toes. Some dogs have presented showing localised skin irritation, especially of their paws whilst others have come in with severe gastric signs.
The cause of SCI is still unknown but some dogs have or have had harvest mite infestation. In this area in the past, some sick dogs have presented after walks at Clumber Park or Sherwood Forest. In previous years evergreen forests appear to have posed a greater threat whereas any grass meadows can be home to harvest mite.
If you have concerns that your dog is showing any of the following signs please speak to your veterinary surgeon immediately: sickness, diarrhoea and lethargy with or without harvest mite infestation. Prompt treatment including IV fluids saves lives.
